Artist bio

Aprille McShane (b. 1975) is a British artist living in Sheffield whose expanded practice explores nature through wonder, attentive ecological observation and visual imagination. Rooted in daily walking and sustained encounters with landscape, her work communicates an embodied relationship with the natural world rather than seeking to transcribe it, creating spaces for reflection, connection and renewed ways of seeing.

Influenced by childhood wonder, folklore, land use, imagination and motherhood, McShane works through gathering, photography, writing, sketchbooking, printmaking and painting across multiple works at once, allowing time for pause, reflection and intuitive response.

Alongside her studio practice, she works as a public artist with a strong interest in how art can serve and connect communities through collaborative and participatory projects. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, realised in public art installations and is held in private collections.

Artist statement

"I paint nature through a practice of spending time in the natural world through daily walks and wonderings. I am interested in sharing my relationship with nature, one shaped by curiosity, attention, movement and female experience. Active influences of childhood wonder, land use, folklore, imagination and motherhood filter into my emotional response to place. Through a methodology of gathering, writing, sketch booking and printmaking ideas for paintings emerge. Working across a selection of canvases leaves room for pause, migration, call and response. Through this process, painting becomes both a record of attention and a way of sharing lived experiences of being in and with the natural world." - Aprille McShane
